9th of CNY is traditionally the birthday of the Jade Emperor.
This day is especially important to Hokkiens.
Come midnight of the eighth day of the new year,
Hokkiens will offer thanks giving prayers to the Emperor of Heaven. 
My house stop this traditionally for 3 years since my grandmother pass away .
Mum said that she gonna stop this but she still prepare the things until the end she follow everybody pray too..

Our house just pray fruits and kuih  because we are vege..
